Picture a 9-year-old boy cycling through dark, empty streets at 4 AM, about to deliver newspapers before school. That was me, unknowingly learning my first business lessons. While other kids were dreaming in their beds, I was discovering the fundamentals of entrepreneurship – consistency and dedication, with the satisfaction of earning my own way I might add.

Another one of my earliest business experiences came from an unexpected source – leftover Guy Fawkes fireworks, (they were still legal in the 80’s). The following day, neighborhood kids heard the bangs of my Tom Thumbs echoing down the street, they came over eagerly as they had no fireworks left over… all my fire crackers were gone but my pockets were full (big grin). Without realizing it, I’d stumbled onto some key business principles: supply and demand, market opportunity, and the power of word-of-mouth advertising.

My journey through South Africa’s challenging job market was like navigating a storm – retrenchments are as common as table salt. But each company shift taught me something valuable. I learned adaptability from changing industries, resilience from starting over, and the importance of diversifying skills. These lessons have been invaluable in my entrepreneurial journey.
